"A HADITH THAT WILL PUT SMILE ON YOUR FACES"

Abu Hurayra once said that people asked the Messenger of God, “Will we see our Lord on the Day of Judgment?”

To which Prophet Muhammad replied, “Do you find any difficulty seeing a full-moon on a cloud-less night?”
They said, “No, Messenger of God”.
He said, “How about the Sun, do you find any difficulty seeing it on a cloud-less day?”
They said, “No”.
The Prophet said, “That’s how it will be.

People will be resurrected on the day of Judgment and it will be said, ‘Follow whatever you used to worship!’ So some people will follow the Sun, and others will follow the moon, and others will follow Tyrants. However, this Ummah, along with its hypocrites, will stay put, and God will come and say ‘I am your Lord’. [Not having seen God before, and confused by the whole experience] They will say ‘We’re not going anywhere until our Lord comes, and when He comes, we will recognize Him’. Then God will come to them and say ‘I am your Lord’. Then they will [realize and] say ‘[Wow!!!] You are our Lord!’, and they will follow Him.

[The Messenger of God then continued] “Then the Sirat (Path) will be cast across Jahannam (Hell), and I and my Ummah will be the first to cross it. No one on that day will speak expect the Messengers [of God], and all what they will say on that day will be ‘Please God, get us out of this safely!’ (Allahumma Sallim Sallim). Jahannam will be full of hooks and thorns that snatch people, all according to their deeds. Some will fall in because of their deeds, and others will be cut and shredded until they cross to the other side. Then when God would want to have mercy over the people in the Fire, He will command the Angels to take out everyone who used to worship God, and they will do so. The Angels will recognize them by their prostration marks, as God has prohibited the Fire from burning them and the son of Adam will be consumed by the Fire except for his prostration marks. They will come out charred and the Water of Life will be poured on them after which they will rise again the way a seed germinates after rain.

[Continuing] “Then, after God judges between everyone, a man will remain between the Fire and Paradise*. He will be removed from the Fire but his face will be fixed towards it, so he will cry: ‘Please God, let me face elsewhere! Its heat has dried me and its wind has burnt me!’
God will say: ‘If you are granted this wish, will you ask for anything else?’

He will cry: ‘No!! I swear by your Greatness I will not!’
And he will continue to promise and pledge not to ask anything else, until his face will be directed away from the Fire and towards Paradise. He will see its beauty… but [remembering his promise] will remain silent. He will stay silent for a long, long, time, then eventually [unable to bear any longer] will cry: ‘Please Lord, please bring me forward… just to the Gate of Paradise!! …’
God will say: ‘Didn’t you promise that you wouldn’t ask for anything else?’

The man will cry: ‘But Lord, please don’t make me the most miserable of your creation!’
God will say: ‘If I grant you your wish then do not ask for anything else?!’
He will cry: ‘I won’t!!! I promise, I swear by you Greatness I will not!’

And he will continue to promise and pledge not to ask for anything else, until he is brought to the Gate of Paradise. When he reaches it, he will look inside and see its vigor, charm and pleasure… but [remembering his promise] will remain silent. He will stay silent for a long, long time, then eventually [unable to bear any longer] will cry: ‘O Lord… please… please let me enter Paradise!!’

God will say: ‘You’re unbelievable! How treacherous can you get Son of Adam?! Didn’t you make all those promises and pledges not to ask for anything else?’
But the man will cry: ‘But Lord, please don’t make me the most miserable of your creation!’

So God, the exalted, will Laugh, and allow the man to enter Paradise. Then God will tell him, ‘Make a wish!’
And the man will keep on wishing and wishing and asking for so many things until he can’t find anything else to ask for. Then God will help him out and remind him saying, ‘How about this… and how about that?’ And then, when the man is completely satisfied, God will say, ‘All your wishes will be granted… and doubled!’

When Abu Hurayra finished narrating this prophetic saying, Abu Saeed interjected:
“But Abu Hurayra! The Messenger of God said, ‘All your wishes will be granted… and multiplied by ten!’
Abu Hurayra: “I only remember that they will be doubled.”
Abu Saeed: “No, no… [trust me]… they will be multiplied by ten!”
Abu Hurayra said:" He is the last of the people of Fire to enter paradise"

Treating our parents well is a religious duty and one of the tenets and principles of Islam. Allah, the Exalted, reinforces the duty to be kind to parents in the Holy Qur'an as this injunction always appears soon after the worship of Allah:"Worship Allah and join none with him (in worship) and do good to parents."(4:36).

Good treatment of parents is also the way of the Prophets. Allah, the Glorious and the Almighty, praised Prophet Yahya (John), peace be upon him, saying:"and dutiful towards his parents, and he was never arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents)."(19:14). Allah, the Exalted, describes Issa (Jesus), peace be upon him, saying:" He has made me kind to my mother, and made me not arrogant, miserable."(19:32).

O believers, The Qur'anic commandments as well the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, guide us in the obligations towards our parents. Indeed, there is an Islamic parent-child code of behavior that will never change since rules were laid down by divine command. Furthermore, grateful to parents is one of the most important acts of obedience to Allah, an act that will earn you the love of Allah and His grace in this world and the afterlife. Fulfilling parents' rights brings prosperity and longevity as the Messenger of Allah said:"He who desires that his life-span and wealth increase, should treat his parents well and with compassion and be good to his kinship."

O servants of Allah, If you treat your parents with heart and soul, you will be rewarded with your children' good treatment. The Messenger of Allah said:"Treat your parents well and your children will treat you well." Not only will you earn Allah's love, it will be your gateway to heaven as well. O servants of Allah, Our parents deserve our utmost kindness and respect. In Islam, the obligations and responsibilities towards them have been addressed in great detail as it encompass all aspects of life. It is incumbent upon us to provide for them and fulfill their financial needs. We must talk to them nicely and with leniency. We have to be humble towards them, obey them, never shout at them. Islam teaches us not to let our parents feel down or angry even by uttering a single word such as "Ugh". Next to Allah, man owes the greatest obligations towards his parents. We must show them kindness, respect and humility. Allah says in His Divine Revelation:" Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor, And our of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say "my Lord! Bestow on them your Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood."(17:23-24).

O Muslims, If you feel that you did not repay your immense indebtedness to your parents, please do so without delay. Express your thanks and appreciation to them for what they have endured to bring you up and the sacrifices they made for your wellbeing. Allah, Exalted is He, says:"Show gratitude to Me and to your parents."(31:14). Even if you are a good child, do treat your parents even better. If you feel you didn't repay them enough, now is the time to show your gratitude to them.

O believers, Remember your parents with gratitude when they pass away. Pray and supplicate Allah for their forgiveness. Keep in touch with their relatives, fulfill their wills, and always remember their good deeds. O Muslims, remember to do charitable work from which your deceased parents can benefit such as building mosques, providing water resources, waqf (religious endowments) and other everlasting charity (sadaqa Jariya). A man asked the Prophet (pbuh) "What am I entitled to do for my parents after their death? The Prophet (pbuh) replied:" there are four things: remembering them with gratitude and praying to Allah for their forgiveness, fulfilling their wills.

Narrated Anas:
When `Abdullah bin Salam heard the arrival of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him at Medina, he came to him and said, "I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a prophet: What is the first portent of the Hour? What will be the first meal taken by the people of Paradise? Why does a child resemble its father, and why does it resemble its maternal uncle" Allah's Messenger said, "Gabriel has just now told me of their answers." `Abdullah said, "He (i.e. Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews." Allah's Messenger said, "The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the east to the west; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be Extra-lobe (caudate lobe) of fish-liver. As for the resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and gets discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets discharge first, the child will resemble her." On that `Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah(GOD)." `Abdullah bin Salam further said, "O Allah's Messenger ! The Jews are liars, and if they should come to know about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they would tell a lie about me." The Jews came to Allah's Messenger and `Abdullah went inside the house. Allah's Apostle asked (the Jews), "What kind of man is `Abdullah bin Salam amongst you?" They replied, "He is the most learned person amongst us, and the best amongst us, and the son of the best amongst us." Allah's Messenger said, "What do you think if he embraces Islam (will you do as he does)?" The Jews said, "May Allah save him from it." Then `Abdullah bin Salam came out in front of them saying, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah." Thereupon they said, "He is the evilest among us, and the son of the evilest amongst us," and continued talking badly of him.

Sahih al-Bukhari hadith 3329

It is proven in the saheeh Sunnah that the first food offered to welcome the people of Paradise when they enter it will be “the caudate lobe of whale liver”. That is mentioned in the hadeeth of Thawbaan, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), according to which one of the Jewish rabbis came to ask the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about some matters to test him. In the hadeeth it says:

The Jewish man said: What will be presented to them first when they enter Paradise?

He said: “Caudate lobe of whale liver.”

He said: What food will be given to them after that?

He said: “The bull of Paradise, which used to graze along its edges, will be slaughtered for them.”

He said: What will their drink be?

He said: “From a spring there that is called Salsabeel.”

Narrated by Muslim, 315

Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The words “What will be presented to them” refer to that with which a man is welcomed. Ibraaheem al-Halabi said: It is usually good quality fruits.

He also said:

This refers to a whale, according to scholarly consensus… As for the caudate lobe of the liver, this is a separate piece that is attached to the liver and it is the best part of it.

That is also proven in other saheeh hadeeths in as-Saheehayn and as-Sunan. We quoted this particular hadeeth because of what it contains of differentiating between the first food presented to the people of Paradise, which is the caudate lobe of fish liver, and the food that they will eat after that, which is the meat of the “bull of Paradise”.

We could not find anything to indicate the wisdom behind the caudate lobe of whale liver being the first food presented to the people of Paradise, but we believe that Allah’s wisdom is great and that Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, is the All-Knowing, Most Wise, and that He said of Himself (interpretation of the meaning):

“And your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses, no choice have they (in any matter). Glorified be Allah, and exalted above all that they associate as partners (with Him)”

[al-Qasas 28:68].
